After Klimt, 2007

Italian glass tiles, glass ceramic, copper, paper pulp, found objects, oil paint on a cement-based substrate
1400 x 560 x 40 mm

This piece began as a technical challenge. My decision to appropriate the design was based on a need to focus purely on aspects of construction, with a range of materials and techniques.

Achieving overlapping layers of disparate media, much like tucking in the flaps of a cardboard box, was a stimulating challenge. The sculptural aspects were built up with paper pulp, with much layering and carving before priming and painting. The copper was old telephone cabling, and required stripping, annealing, soldering in place, then screwing to the substrate. A learning experience, a labour of love, and an exercise in problem solving.
