“So the Queen Boadicea, standing loftily charioted,
Brandishing in her hand a dart and rolling glances lioness-like,
Yell'd and shriek'd between her daughters in her fierce volubility.”

”Boadicea” by Tennyson

Boadicea (or Boudicca) was the warrior-queen of the Celtic Iceni tribe: a patriotic Briton, a heroine, a woman and a leader who stood her ground against Roman invasion. With her defiance, Boadicea (whose Celtic name means ‘Victory’) set a trend for strong female leaders in British history.

BoadiCDea plays with concepts of past and present, strength and resilience. I wanted to juxtapose ancient materials and techniques against contemporary hi-tech material, whilst making links between a strong woman of history and our young contemporary women about to ‘bust out’ with the potential to make their own significant mark on the world.
