About
Kate Howard is an interdisciplinary visual artist living and working in Naarm/Melbourne. Her interest in a diverse range of materials – often recontextualising and making unexpected connections – forms the foundation of her practice. She integrates knowledge and methods from different studio disciplines to explore our perception of the intrinsic value of things: objects, time, and place.
Her materials of interest, over thirty years’ practice, include glass, cement, copper, wire, fibre and found objects. She values curiosity, experimentation, and skilled understanding of technique to challenge the possibilities of a medium.
Kate has been selected as a finalist in the Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize, Toorak Village Sculpture Exhibition, Yering Station Sculpture Awards, National Art Teacher Prize, Gippsland Sculpture Exhibition, Sculpture@Shaw, among others. Her work has been awarded the Valda Cuming Sculpture Award (Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors Annual Exhibition 2024), Innovative use of Materials (Contemporary Art Society of Victoria Annual Exhibition – judge Prudence Flint), Judge’s commendation (BIGsculpture@Vegout, St Kilda – judge Max Delaney, Artistic Director & CEO, ACCA), Winner, 2D category (Swanpool Creative Recycled Art Prize), Winner, Small Sculpture/Functional category (Swanpool Creative Recycled Art Prize), among others.
